“Men, Women and Children” (2014), directed by Jason Reitman, concerns the issues of technology and our contemporary dependence on it. The film presents the story of several families which deal with the present-day problems of teenagers, their parents and difficulties encountered in relationships in the era of the Internet. Having constant access to the Internet on our smartphones, on-line games, social media, and so on, significantly influences the 21^stcentury life, and especially the everyday life of teenagers. Some of us are thrilled with the new technology inventions but some of us are worried. It seems that the more we are available and visible in the web, the more we are lonely in real life.

Other issues highlighted in the movie are also peer pressure and anorexia. It is very well illustrated with the character of Allison, who is an attractive cheerleader. However, as we can deduce, in the past she used to be overweight. She is a skinny girl who stints herself on food and who looks for some advice on reducing her appetite on the Internet. Another point concerned with the character of Allison is sex, virginity and pregnancy. She has a crush on an older boy from her school. She tries to impress him and make him feel the same towards her. She loses her virginity at some random meeting with him, gets pregnant and then miscarries the baby due to her anorexia. Nevertheless, all these problems do not seem to be important to her as her main concern is to please her crush.

What we liked very much was that the director of “Men, Women and Children” breaks the taboo and tries to deal with the problems that in many cases are marginalized. The cheerleader Hannah, for instance, feels the pressure to lose her virginity as in her eyes it is a shame to be a virgin. Her mother is permissive towards her and she even takes controversial photos of her in underwear, which she publishes online. The oversexualization of teenagers is certainly a growing problem.

The director also presents the character of Tim, a teenager who lost his faith in the meaning of life. He is gradually becoming more and more withdrawn and addicted to MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games). His parents got divorced, his mother abandoned them and he lives only with his concerned father. The boy cannot cope with the breaking up of his family. He has left the football team and now everyone hates him because he was one of the best players and the team is losing without him. His only rescue is the girl he met, Brandy. She is another character in the movie having issues. Her main problem is her mother, Patricia, who at all costs wants to protect and control her. Brandy is under her surveillance. Her mother is spying on her all the time, even tracking her through the phone to know where she is. Brandy is trying to cheat her mother but eventually the truth comes out. The girl has a second personality on the blog, on which she publishes photos in which she looks completely different. She thinks that only on tumblr can she be herself. What is positive in these teenagers’ lives is the fact that they support each other.

Another problem with which the director deals is pornography. It is easily available on the Internet not only to adults but also to teenagers. Because of his addiction to porn and distorted reality presented there, young Chris is unable to perform in front of one of the most attractive girls at school. Also the story of his parents, bored with themselves and looking for sex partners on the Internet, shows the audience that because of technology such stuff as sex loses its deeper meaning and becomes only an emotionless act or service.

To sum up, the movie concerns really important present-day issues like easy access to pornography, addictions, eating disorders and so on. Definitely, we are now more at risk of all these problems than our parents were. Why? The answer is obvious. The new technology and the Internet have become destructive. If someone knows no bounds, they can easily destroy themselves in the real life. We think that the movie cautions the audience about the addiction to digital life.

Film „Uwiązani” został nakręcony przez Jasona Reitmana w 2014 r. Dotyczy przede wszystkim kwestii związanych z nowoczesną technologią i rosnącego od niej uzależnienia. Film przedstawia historię kilku rodzin borykających się z problemami współczesnych nastolatków i ich rodziców oraz z trudnościami pojawiającymi się w relacjach międzyludzkich w dobie internetu. Świat nowych technologii – smartfony, media społecznościowe, gry online itd. – wszystko to ma ogromny wpływ na współczesne życie, szczególnie nastolatków. W zawrotnym tempie powstają nowe technologie i wynalazki, co wielu z nas przyprawia o dreszczyk emocji. Jednak są tacy, którzy potrafią dostrzec i ciemną stroną postępu technologicznego. Niejednokrotnie ludzie, którzy w internecie sprawiają wrażenie towarzyskich i otwartych, w prawdziwym życiu są samotni.

Jednym z problemów, które porusza reżyser, jest presja rówieśników i anoreksja. W bardzo dobry sposób ilustruje to na przykładzie Allison, będącej atrakcyjną cheerleaderką, która w przeszłości miała problemy z nadwagą. Allison przedstawiona jest jako bardzo chuda nastolatka, która głodzi się, szukając porad w internecie. Kolejny motyw związany z postacią Allison dotyczy seksu, dziewictwa i ciąży. Jest ona zakochana w starszym od siebie chłopaku z tej samej szkoły. Stara się mu zaimponować i sprawić, by odwzajemnił jej uczucie. Z tego powodu decyduje się stracić z nim dziewictwo na przypadkowym spotkaniu. Wówczas zachodzi w ciążę, którą następnie traci z powodu anoreksji. Mimo wszystko, te problemy zdają się nie mieć dla niej większego znaczenia, a jej głównym celem jest zaspokojenie jej miłostki.

W filmie bardzo podoba nam się to, że reżyser stara się przełamać temat tabu i zwrócić uwagę na problemy, które w wielu przypadkach są marginalizowane. Dobry przykład stanowi Hanna – cheerleaderka, która odczuwa presję ze strony koleżanek odnośnie utraty dziewictwa. Uważa ona, że bycie dziewicą w obecnych czasach jest kompromitujące. Jej matka jest wobec niej bardzo pobłażliwa, co więcej, sama robi i publikuje zdjęcia córki w bieliźnie na stronie internetowej. Wydaje nam się, że kwestia nastolatków, w dużej mierze pochłoniętych problemem swojej seksualności i szybkiego dorastania, staje się coraz bardziej powszechna i problematyczna.

Reżyser przedstawił nam także postać Tima, nastolatka, który utracił wiarę w sens życia. Staje się coraz bardziej zamknięty w sobie i uzależniony od internetowej gry MMORPG. Rodzice chłopaka rozwiedli się, jego matka ich porzuciła, a on został sam z ojcem. Cały czas nie może się z tym pogodzić. Po odejściu Tima z drużyny futbolowej, drużyna zaczęła przegrywać, a koledzy zaczęli traktować go wrogo. Jego „ostatnią deską ratunku” jest dziewczyna, którą poznał, Brandy. Ona również jest postacią zmagającą się z problemami. Jej utrapieniem jest matka, Patricia, która za wszelką cenę chce ją chronić i kontrolować. Brandy jest wciąż pod jej obserwacją. Matka nieustannie ją szpieguje, namierzając dziewczynę nawet przez telefon, żeby mieć pewność, gdzie jest w danym momencie. Brandy próbuje oszukać matkę, ale finalnie prawda wychodzi na jaw. Dziewczyna ma drugą osobowość na blogu, który prowadzi. Publikuje tam swoje zdjęcia, na których wygląda zupełnie inaczej. Myśli, że tylko na tumblr. może być sobą. Pozytywną rzeczą w życiu obojga nastolatków jest to, że się poznali i mają w sobie oparcie.

Kolejnym problemem poruszonym przez reżysera staje się pornografia. Obecnie jest ona łatwo dostępna nie tylko dla dorosłych, ale po prostu dla wszystkich użytkowników internetu, w tym dla dzieci i młodzieży. Z powodu uzależnienia od pornografii i pokazywanej tam odrealnionej wizji rzeczywistości, Chris, inny nastolatek, zaczyna cierpieć na impotencję w przypadku rzeczywistych stosunków z kobietami. Również wątek rodziców Chrisa, którzy, znudzeni sobą, znajdują partnerów seksualnych w internecie, pokazuje, że technologia przyczynia się do traktowania seksu jako usługi.

Podsumowując, w film porusza wiele aktualnych i problematycznych tematów, takich jak: łatwy dostęp do pornografii, uzależnienie, zaburzenia odżywiania itd. Z pewnością jesteśmy bardziej narażeni na to wszystko niż kiedyś byli nasi rodzice. Dlaczego? Odpowiedź jest oczywista. Nowa technologia i internet w wielu przypadkach mogą okazać się destrukcyjne. Jeżeli ktoś nie potrafi w rozsądny sposób korzystać z internetu i z tego, co obecnie oferują nam nowoczesne technologie, łatwo może zatracić się w wirtualnym świecie. Myślimy, że film jest pewnym ostrzeżeniem przed uzależnieniami od nowoczesnego życia „w sieci”.
