Where the Wild Are is not a film for children, but an exploration of childhood viewed by adults. Spike Jonze’s adaptation of the picture book by Maurice Sendak is a chronicle of childhood depression. The filmmaker thus invites us into a fabulous and fragile world that only a child can create: it is a clear but also an unpredictable and disturbing reality.

Max is a child with a vivid but problematic imagination. Occasionally, he suffers from small outbursts of anger when things do not go the way he would like them to be. In one of his outbreaks, angry with his mother, he runs away from home and makes a trip to the island where the wild things are. Once Max becomes friends with them, he is elected their king and his task is to bring happiness to the group. Yet he soon realizes that it is not as easy as it seemed at first.

With a stunning production design, the young Max Records offers a brilliant interpretation of Sendak’s tale. Spike Jonze transforms the tale of a misbehaving child into a melancholic reflection on loneliness: how difficult it is to grow up and stop being the centre of attention; how difficult it is to stop living in a fantasy world.

Where the Wild Things Are also invites adults to remember their days as children, the time when innocence, imagination and happiness played the main role in their lives. However, the ending is rather bitter because adults are to return from the world of fantasy. Be that as it may, the journey to the land of the wild creatures results to be exciting and didactic as the viewer is to return with a more mature point of view on the world: children have to realize that their parents are human and are allowed to make mistakes, while adults have to be more understanding towards their children.

Max to chłopiec z bujną, lecz jakże problematyczną wyobraźnią.

Niemniej jednak, film nie zapomina, by w ponurym epilogu przypomnieć wszystkim o nieuchronnej konieczności powrotu do świata rzeczywistego świata.
